As pledged, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) through its Wish Campaign will be turning one person into a millionaire in the near future, and this time around the public can play their part to help realise the dream of one lucky winner.
Yesterday, BIBD revealed its 12 nominees for the $1,000,000 Grand Wish Award during a ceremony held at Rizqun Hotel.
As stated, the public will be able to nominate (either online at www.bibdwish.com or through SMS) their chosen million dollar winner, which will officially open on March 2 and end on April 1, 2010.
Thirty per cent of the scores of the 12 awardees will be determined by public nomination, whilst an esteemed panel of judges will contribute the remaining 70 per cent. The nominee with the highest score will be named the Grand Awardee.
Wish stories were first short-listed by an independent party, after which the corresponding wish-makers' accounts were continuously monitored to ensure that they maintained a minimum balance of $2,000 throughout the campaign.
Qualified entries were then given to the judging panel, who chose the awardees based on merit.
According to BIBD Acting Managing Director Javeed Ahmad, 16,000 stories were received over the course of the campaign and "were simply inspirational" - testimony that "Bruneians do aspire to do greater things and are working hard to achieve their goals."
One such story during an interview with the Bulletin showcased one woman's hardship and determination to make a difference.
Her story involves building a tourism destination site that will showcase local handicrafts and cultural shows "that will benefit everyone, that will enrich and maintain the Bruneian heritage."
She also plans to build herself a home and "once I am no longer here, I want my home to be turned into a sanctuary for abused women and children," she said.
"I want to give something back to the country."
The aim of the wish campaign is to cultivate a culture of saving among Bruneians in a sustainable manner by encouraging account holders to increase their savings every month in order to achieve their life's aspirations.
A press release stated that, "The Wish Campaign has led BIBD to realise that part of its role as a national bank is to make it easier for Bruneians to achieve meaningful goals and to bring out the best of Brunei through its work."
Along with Javed Ahmad, present to announce the nominees comprised BIBD Management Hj Mohd Rozaiman DSLJ Hj Abd Rahman, Head of Consumer Banking Division, Hjh Nurul Akmar Hj Jaafar, Head of Sales and Distribution Channel, Hjh Saadatun Amanda Pehin Dato Haji Abas, Head of Legal and Compliance, and Lawrence Chong, Consultant for Wish Campaign.
