Star Wars Day at Gloria Jeans Coffee

IT was Star Wars galore for fans at Gloria Jeans Coffee (GJC) in Citis Square, Jln Berakas yesterday.

Fans of the film series were given special discounts during the specialty coffee company's promotion in conjunction with International Star Wars Day.

Dubbed "May the Froth" a play on the famed movie quote "May the Force be with you", the promotion gave customers swinging by for a cuppa 15 per cent off their bill provided they brought any Star Wars merchandise such as t-shirts, keychains and even DVDs.

The event even had children bringing along their Star Wars figures and proudly displaying them.

GJC also gave away minifig (mini figurines) fridge magnets of characters from the film series for every $25 spent during the special occassion.

The homage to the film didn't stop there. True to its theme, the coffee franchise was decked out with Star Wars figures and dioramas.

Customers walking into GJC were able to see the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT), Death Star playset as well as scenes from the film series.

The dioramas were judged by the Brunei Usergroup Lego and Technics (BULAT) group and the best was awarded with a prize.

The group was also the provider of the Lego sets used during a speed building session at the coffee franchise on the same day.

During the session, Lego fans witnessed the building of R2D2s (a Star Wars character) and B-Wings (a type of spacecraft found in the film series) by two teams of lego builders.

In addition, customers who walked in between 3pm to 4pm, and 6pm to 7pm were treated to appearances of individuals clad in Star Wars characters.

According to GJC Branch Manager, Firdaus Omar, the coffee franchise is trying to hold events such as "May the Froth" more.

To stay updated for similar events, and join in the fun with GJC, add the coffee franchise on Facebook at facebook.com/GloriaJeansBN or follow them on Instagram at @gloriajeansbn.

Celebrate an epic concordance of pop-culture at International Cosplay Day Singapore (ICDS) 2013

Suspend disbelief for a day. Dive into a setting inspired by science & magic in Eastern and Western pop-culture when International Cosplay Day Singapore (ICDS) returns this August.

Into it's second year, ICDS 2013 will feature internationally acclaimed guests-of-honor, as well as a gamut of pop-culture content and Singapore's 3rd Annual Cosplay Chess stage show.

Following ICDS's success in 2012, which saw more than 1,000 visitors attending the fan-driven cosplay & pop-culture convention at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, organizer Neo Tokyo Project has partnered with *SCAPE Co. Ltd to bring ICDS to Singapore's shopping belt in Orchard Road on 25 August 2013

The convention expects to attract more than 3,000 pop-culture lovers from all walks of life this year, including anime fans, cosplay enthusiasts and gamers.

Guests-of-honor at ICDS this year will include celebrated Filipina cosplayer, model, artist, actress and now recording artist, Alodia Gosiengfiao, former World Cosplay Summit (WCS) representative for Singapore and veteran cosplayer, Yuanie, as well as Clive Lee, a pre-eminent cosplayer and costume maker whose amazing Gundam creations have won multiple awards over the years, including the prestigious Anime Festival Asia (AFA) Regional Cosplay Championship.

Joining them is critically acclaimed photographer Jay Tablante. Jay has collaborated with D.C. and Marvel to produce some of the most iconic and daring images in comic book cosplay of all time, and will be exhibiting his work at ICDS.

“International Cosplay Day Singapore is a celebration of cosplay and pop-culture by fans, for fans,” said Mr. Jason Koh, editor-in-chief of Neo Tokyo Project.

“The convention transcends barriers by presenting an eclectic fusion of Eastern and Western pop-culture elements. This year, we plan to make the ICDS experience even more robust by giving visitors an opportunity to shape the outcome of our stage show,” he concluded.

To gamify the convention and to inject interactivity, Neo Tokyo Project will be introducing ConQuest - a proprietary framework that reimagines convention goers as either proponents of Science or acolytes of Magic. Visitors will complete a series of achievements while partaking of the convention, and their contributions will impact the finale of Singapore's 3rd Annual Cosplay Chess.

Highlights of the convention include:

Singapore's 3rd Annual Cosplay Chess – An epic battle between the forces of Science and Magic rages on stage in this 2-hour long cosplay performance extravaganza. Watch as Okabe Rintarou from Steins;Gate attempts to save the world from the destructive machinations of Deathwing the Destroyer from Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft®. With more than 60 cast and crew members, this segment is not to be missed!

Cosplay Talent Showcase – A talent showcase that will see cosplayers from Singapore and around the region putting their performance skills to the test to win prizes and accolades from our esteemed guests-of-honor.

Blizzard Cosplay Runway – Come to ICDS 2013 in costume as any of your favorite Diablo®, StarCraft® or World of Warcraft characters for a chance to win limited edition prizes sponsored by Blizzard Entertainment in this runway segment.

Calls for entries for both the Cosplay Talent Showcase and Blizzard Cosplay Runway will be announced in June 2013.

Artisan's Alley and Live Art Murals – We welcome artist groups and creators to exhibit their works at ICDS. This year, several walls outside the The Warehouse have also been re-purposed into Live Art Murals, where exhibiting artists and visitors with a creative streak can leave their mark!

Sponsor, Vendor and VIP Booths – Our various sponsors, anime goods and pop-culture vendors will be showcasing and retailing their products at ICDS. Jay Tablante will also be retailing copies of Geekology 101, and holding an exhibition of his works during the convention.

ICDS Post-Event Celebration and Dance Party – Party the night away in a 2-hour celebration of anime and videogame grooves, featuring singers and musicians from the local pop-culture music scene.
