BIBD Charity Expedition

Overwhelming response for BIBD Japan Charity Expedition

ABOUT 1,000 participants flocked to the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium to raise funds for Japan's disaster victims in the Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) Charity Expedition for Japan yesterday.

BIBD Corporate Communications Officer Sonia Kaur said the response was "overwhelming" as they received just as much supporters as they expected, "if not a little more".

"It is very heartwarming to see so many supporters ready to help others in need," she added.

Japan was hit by an earthquake and tsunami, killing thousands of people in March this year.

The bank hoped to foster a caring culture through various means that could gather the public to join hands in helping their East Asian neighbours and other members of the community.

The event that flagged off yesterday comprised four events; a 58km Charity Cycle, an 11km Charity Run, a 2.89km "Jalan-Jalan Saja" (just taking a stroll) event and Charity Bazaar.

Speaking with The Brunei Times, Afzan Drahman, 27, said he was excited to be part of a good cause. The event allowed him to kill two birds with one stone: to do good deeds, and practising a healthy lifestyle.

"I run to help the Japanese people... you feel good when you do a healthy activity and do charity at the same time," Afzan, who participated in the 11km Charity Run said.

"This is for a good cause, to help the people in Japan... and every once in a while, it's nice to wake up early in the morning to enjoy a brisk walk," said 28-year-old marine engineer, Aaron Chua who took part in the 2.89km fun walk.

Liew Chee Hau, 25, said he took part in the 11km charity run because he wants to engage in the physical activity. "I just want to run... but it's also good because you can do charity and help the Japanese people," he said.

"This is the amazing part about our culture... anytime there's a cause, the people will always lend a helping hand, whether in the form of money, or doing runs, they will always put in some effort," Sonia told The Brunei Times.

Minister of Industry and Primary Resources and BIBD Chairman Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar was present as the guest of honour to flag off the event.
