Pentax unveils Optio RZ18

PENTAX Imaging Company announced the Optio RZ18 digital compact camera. Featuring a slim, lightweight body, the new model offers a powerful 18X optical zoom lens covering focal lengths from 25mm wide angle to 450mm super-telephoto (in the 35mm format). The Optio RZ18 is the latest addition to PENTAX Optio RZ zoom lens series, which provides photographers simple, effortless shooting of a wide variety of subjects and occasions, from travel and landscape to action and spectator sports.

Ricoh buys Pentax

Japanese optical glass-maker Hoya said on Friday it would sell its Pentax camera business to copier and printer maker Ricoh , in a deal the Nikkei business daily said was worth about 10 billion yen (USD124.2 million).

Battling falling prices for its compact cameras, Ricoh hopes to establish a presence in the profitable upmarket single-lens reflex camera segment, the Nikkei business daily said.

The two companies will hold a news conference about the transaction at 0730 GMT.

The deal will go through in October, Hoya said in a filing to the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Shares in Hoya ended up 4 percent at 1,845 yen, after climbing as high as 6 percent to 1,888 yen on the news, while Ricoh was down 0.2 percent, in a broader market climb of 0.5 percent .

Hoya, which bought Pentax in 2007 mainly to gain access to its medical technology, had been widely expected to sell off the camera business.

Pentax is the world's tenth largest digital camera brand by shipments, with just 1.5 percent of the market, according to research firm IDC.

Sales of Pentax cameras dropped just over 13 percent in the year ended March 2011, amid fierce price competition in the compact camera market.

Copier and printer-maker Ricoh , which aims to shed nearly 10 percent of its workforce to improve profits, also has a digital camera business, but sales are too small to feature in global data.

Pentax K-5 announced

PENTAX Imaging Systems is pleased to announce the launch of the PENTAX K-5 interchangeable lens digital SLR camera.

Pentax Japan unveils K-x in “rainbow colors”

It seems Pentax Japan just loves redesigning their K-x digital camera. The company started offering extra-colorful versions of the device last September, followed by another limited edition, a K-x in “robotic colors”, one month later. Now, Pentax unveiled the so-called TOWER RECORDS × PENTAX RAINBOW K-x, designed in collaboration with – you guessed it – Tower Records in Japan.

As usual, Pentax didn’t modify the camera technically and offers this version as a limited edition (1,000 units).

The Rainbow K-x is already listed on Tower Records Japan’s website (through which it will be sold exclusively) and costs $810. Tower Records plans to ship the Japan-only device from July 23.

Pentax Launches Five New Cameras For Moms

When it comes to technology that moms love, digital photography ranks near the top, and Pentax is clinching that with a handful of new products available in time for Mother's Day.

At the centerfold of today's announcement is the Optio I-10 (pictured), a digital SLR with a pearl white casing and leather-texture feel. The I-10 has a 5x optical zoom, 12.1 megapixels, and is designed to look like a classic film SLR camera.

Then there's the Optio W90, a rugged photo-taking device for moms who want to capture all those outdoor memories. Water, freezing temperatures, and dust don't stand a chance against the W90. This model also has a 12.1-megapixel resolution and 5x optical zoom.

The Pentax X90 is next, with a whopping 26x zoom lens, marketed as a camera that allows parents to get all the up-close action of their kids on the soccer field, in a concert, or anything else that would otherwise make it difficult to zoom in on that special child. There's 12.1 megapixels with this unit as well, and a self-proclaimed long battery life.

In addition to those three models, Pentax also unveiled two new basic point-and-shoot cameras: the H90 and E90.

All five are touted as compact cameras that can be taken anywhere, so mom will never miss an opportunity for a photo that will bring nothing but humiliating later on.

Along with the K-x, PENTAX announced the smc PENTAX DA L 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED super-telephoto zoom lens. This lens will be exclusive to a K-x Twin Lens Kit package consisting of a K-x body, this new lens and the smc PENTAX DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 lens. The PENTAX K-x is now available for pre-order in black or white. Limited edition colors of red and navy will become available at select locations to be announced.

Pentax unveils Optio WS80 waterproof camera

Pentax introduces Optio W80 rugged camera

The manufacturer that builds digital cameras to go boldly where none have gone before has announced the PENTAX Optio W80. More adventure-proof than ever, this latest PENTAX digital camera is waterproof, dustproof, coldproof, and now shockproof enough to withstand impact from a fall of more than three feet (one meter).

PENTAX first introduced dunkable digital cameras in 2003 to the delight of outdoor enthusiasts, travelers and families everywhere. Today, the PENTAX Optio W80’s waterproof design withstands depths of up to 16 feet (5 meters) to protect from rain and spills, as well as allowing full underwater photos and video for up to two hours. On dry land, the rugged, shockproof design protects against drops of up to 3.3 feet to protect the camera from hard use and occasional spills. Also featuring 12.1 megapixels, a 5X internal optical zoom (equivalent to 28-140mm), a slim one inch body, and a wide angle 28mm lens, the Optio W80 offers an expanded perspective that is ideal for landscape, group and more confined shots. Pentax launches two weather resistant lenses

Along with the K-7 DSLR, Pentax has launched the smc PENTAX-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL WR and smc PENTAX-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6ED WR weather-resistant lenses. Treated with Super-Protect (SP) coating for dust resistance and designed with environmental sealing, both the lenses complement the latest Pentax weather-resistant DSLRs. Priced at $199.95 USD for the DA 18-55mm and $249.95 USD for the DA 50-200mm, the lenses will start shipping in July 2009.

Pentax K-7 Announced

Pentax has announced the K-7 mid-level DSLR, based around an updated version of the Pentax/Samsung 14.6 MP CMOS sensor. The specifications - magnesium alloy body, 5.2 fps shooting, 720p HD video, 920,000 dot LCD - will not come as a surprise to the Pentax faithful, following comprehensive leaking of its details. However, we've been lucky enough to get hold of a pre-production camera to bring you a detailed hands-on preview of the K-7.

The K-7 will be available in July for a recommended selling price of $1299.95 with the optional D-BG4 battery grip available at the same time for $229.95.
