More than 400 cycling enthusiasts embarked on a pedalling expedition from Kuala Belait to Muara, yesterday morning, in a bid to create environmental awareness and raise funds to support the Heart of Borneo (HOB) forest conservation project that was organised by HSBC.
The cyclists assembled at 6am along the intersection of Jalan Mckerron across HSBC's branch in Kuala Belait where the flag-off for the HOB cycling expedition took place.
Among the cyclists who took part in the 133km cycling challenge was the Chief Executive Officer of HSBC, Mr Tareq Mahmud.
Throughout the course of the journey, the cyclists made pit stops at Anduki Lumut, the Soon Lee Supermarket at Sungai Liang, Bukit Udal in Tutong, at the PDN Primary School in Sengkarai, near the clear azure waters of Brunei's Blue Lagoon, at Jerudong Park, as well as at Meragang beach.
The expedition ended at Serasa beach where a carnival took place to further raise more funds for the HOB project.
HSBC has already committed $800,000 to support the HOB projects in Brunei - a cross-border conservation initiative involving the Sultanate, Indonesia and Malaysia, aimed at preserving 220,000 sq km of pristine forest and creating a more sustainable use of the forestry resources.
The aim of the cycling expedition was its focus on leaving no carbon footprint and to convey this 'green' message to members of the public so as to continue the nation's efforts in supporting the environmental HOB project.
