ICE 2010 response 'overwhelming'

The Ministry of Education recognises that the quality of teaching is critical in preparing students for a society undergoing far-fetched economic and social changes. In this regard, building a high-quality education system relevant to the 21st century social and economic realities has become a top priority for Brunei Darussalam.

This was stated in a speech by the Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education, Awg Hj Mohd Daud bin Hj Mahmud, who was the chief guest at the opening of the 15th International Conference on Education (ICE 2010), yesterday, at the Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Awg Hj Mohd Daud was speaking on the recent success of the SPN 21 national education system.

Organised by the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE), the ICE is an annual international conference that serves as a platform for lively discussions, discourse and debates focussing on key issues in education. Carrying the theme "Challenging Models, Challenging Minds: Initiating Effective Educational Reform and Development", ICE 2010 brings together international academics, educators and teaching professionals as they share their experiences and generate ideas in an attempt to find solutions for current issues in the educational field.

Awg Hj Mohd Daud in his speech said that the quality of teaching provided by teachers to students is central to the idea of a quality education system.

"There have been greater emphases on teachers' values, skills and knowledge that are fundamental to good teaching; expanding teachers' roles and responsibilities of teachers that are shared collaboratively with other professionals; and personalising learning for individual students to accommodate greater diversity in learning," the permanent secretary said.

He further said that teacher preparatory programmes require continual innovative improvements to develop a new generation of teachers who have the ability to promote complex learning in students.

Reinvigorating university-based programmes will require more evidence-based instruction and greater responsiveness to schools, he added.

"Effective professional development strategies must lead to changes in knowledge and skills for teachers to respond more effectively to the problem of practice, to seek active involvement in the development process and to acknowledge that schools are valuable sites for learning," said Awg Hj Mohd Daud.

Meanwhile, the Dean of SHBIE, Dr Hjh Romaizah binti Hj Salleh in her keynote address said the main theme of the conference is apt, timely and especially relevant to SHBIE, which is currently undergoing reforms and development in practices and programmes.

She noted that "education has to rise to the occasion to be both relevant and effective to meet the diverse challenges facing teachers and learners that arise from the demands of a rapidly changing world".

"In order to meet these challenges, reforms and development are necessary for education to stay relevant and effective," the Dean of SHBIE said, adding that the importance of the ICE is to theorise on the "best way forward" to attend to challenges in education and to stay relevant.

Organisers of ICE 2010 said the event has received overwhelming response, with a total of 136 conference papers - from both overseas and local presenters - being accepted for the conference. From the total, 94 papers will be presented by foreign participants from 22 countries and the remaining 42 papers by local presenters. Eighty-four of the conference papers will be presented in English and 42 in Bahasa Melayu. The number also includes nine workshops and one poster presentation.

The participating delegates are from Australia, Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Libya, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United States of America and Vietnam.
