Facebook apps leak user information

Facebook users are inadvertently providing access to their names and in some cases even their friend's names to advertising and Internet tracking companies, through some popular applications, the Wall Street Journal said.

According to the Journal's investigation, the issue affects tens of millions of Facebook app users, including people who set their profiles to Facebook's strictest privacy settings, the paper said.

The practice violates Facebook's rules and raises questions about its ability to keep identifiable information about its users' activities secure, the paper said.

On Sunday, a Facebook spokesman told the Journal that it is taking steps to "dramatically limit" the exposure of users' personal information.

"A Facebook user ID may be inadvertently shared by a user's Internet browser or by an application," the spokesman told the paper.

Knowledge of an ID "does not permit access to anyone's private information on Facebook," he said, adding that the company would introduce new technology to contain the problem identified by the Journal.

Facebook could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters outside regular U.S. business hours.

New Virus Masquerades As Facebook Password Reset

Another new virus is spreading through social networks, this time, via Facebook. This one – known as Bredolab – masks itself as a “Password Reset Confirmation Email,” appears to come from Facebook, and attaches a file that purports to contain a new password.

That file is actually a trojan horse that will download a host of nasty files from the Web and infect your computer with them. Email security firm MX Lab explains further:

“Bredolab is a trojan horse that downloads and executes files from the Internet, such as rogue anti-spyware. To bypass firewalls, it injects its own code into legitimate processes svchost.exe and explorer.exe. Bredolab contains anti-sandbox code (the trojan might quit itself when an external program investigates its actions).”

Thankfully, the fix to this issue is really simple. Now that you know the virus is out there, all you have to do is NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS sent to you by random people claiming to be Facebook. As a general rule, don't open any attachments sent to you by untrusted sources. It's also worth noting that Facebook doesn't change your password with no prior prompting.

Teen fired from Job for Facebook comment

A 16 year-old girl was fired from her home at Ivell Marketing & Logistics because of a comment she posted on her Facebook page. Many employers are now watching Facebook to see what employees are saying and how they are spending their time.

The teen worked at the company for only three weeks and was canned after saying on the social network that her job was boring and stating "It’s s***. All I do is shred, holepunch and scan paper."

Swann said that her statements were only throw away comments and that the company was being petty and was being nosey. Her boss said that other staff had access to her comments.
