All 24 winners of the 'Land of Opportunity' photography competition were announced yesterday by the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) at a prize giving ceremony held at the iCentre.
The guest of honour was YAM Pengiran Anak Khairul Khalil bin Pengiran Syed Haji Jaafari.
The ceremony began with a welcoming remark by the Acting Chairman of BEDB, Dato Paduka Timothy Ong, followed by the presentation of prizes to the winners by YAM Pengiran Anak Khairul Khalil.
In the acting chairman's remarks, he said there were 136 photographers who took part in the competition.
The competition carried the theme 'Land of Opportunity'.
"One of the things that is most important to us is to inspire our young people and those who are not so young that this is truly a land of opportunity," he said.
Featuring three categories, the competition, which was launched on January 2, saw a total of 853 entries being contested over three rounds of judging. Winning the Youth Category was "Our Pride Our Future" by Hj Mohd Guntor Hj Mohd Ali, while Hjh Serimah Hj Kasim walked away as the winner in the Industry Category.
Hirfian Husain meanwhile won first prize in the Environment Category with his picture, "2009 First Sunrise".
First place winners were awarded with cash prizes of B$1,200 while second and third placed winners received $800 and $500 respectively, along with trophies and certificates of participation. Meanwhile, another 15 contestants walked away with consolation prizes worth $100 each.
After the presentation, the guest of honour toured the 'Land of Opportunity' photo exhibition.
With a key message to promote Brunei Darussalam as a land of opportunity for its people and all investors, the competition entries were judged based on creativity, technical capability, photographic quality, relevance and effectiveness in conveying the key message.
The judging also took into consideration on how successfully the message was communicated through the title of the photo.
Besides judges from the BEDB, the final judging round comprised judges from Baiduri Bank Group, Brunei Press Sdn Bhd and Cityneon Displays and Construction Sdn Bhd, in their capacity as sponsors and supporters of the competition, together with one independent judge.
Meanwhile, the Association of Photographers Brunei Darussalam provided initial support in vetting the technicality of the photos.
"We are inspired by the creativity presented by the contestants in this competition. Capturing the beauty and uniqueness of Brunei Darussalam as the land of opportunity is the joy of our effort to promote greater awareness of Brunei's strengths and attractiveness," said Lela Suhailee, Account Manager at the BEDB's Stakeholder Relations, who is also the Project Manager for this competition.
The winning photos and details of the judging process can be viewed on the BEDB website www.bedb.com.bn. The photos will also be displayed at the arrival area of the Brunei International Airport for public viewing.
